A 14-year-old girl took her own life after footage of an alleged gang rape at a graveyard was shared online.
The sex attack allegedly took place in Ghent, Belgium and police Identifying the alleged perpetrators from the images has made five arrests.
This angered the Belgian government and the country’s justice minister expressed his shock at what had happened. daily star Reported.
All the suspects include three minors aged 14 and 15 and two adults aged 18 and 19.
A teenager from Guerre, south of Ghent, thought she was visiting a friend on May 15 at the Westerbegrafplatz cemetery.
However, there were four other persons as well, and they allegedly gang-raped her.
Four days after this happened, the girl committed suicide.
Her family was then told about the attack by one of the girl’s friends, whom she believed.
According to Belgian media reports, two of the minors who have been arrested are brothers and some of the suspects were already known by the police.
They have been arrested on suspicion of rape, indecent assault and taking and transmitting photographs which are likely to attack the integrity of a person.
Gavre Mayor Dennis Dierick said he knew the victim well and said her death was “absolutely horrifying” and “an inhuman tragedy”.
Meanwhile, Justice Minister Vincent van Quikernborn promised on Twitter that those responsible for the girl’s horrific ordeal would be punished.
“Disgusted, there are no words to describe it. My thoughts are with the family and friends,” he said.
“The suspects have been arrested and investigation is on. Justice should be concerned about justice.”
Newsin24 reported the victim’s father saying that his daughter had been “struggling for some time”.
Her grieving father said: “He needed help and unfortunately it took him a very long time to get it.
“He had such a tough time and these facts and pictures were the last straw for him. A 14 year old girl can’t do anything like this.
“He saw his whole world falling apart. Without these people, she would have been there. Right now I can only hope for justice.”
