Hayes’ annual Wage Guide report showed that 14 months after the initial COVID-19 lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic and directives to work from home, technology hiring demand has reached “record levels”.

The report identified that, in Australia, cloud migration has further accelerated, resulting in demand for cloud engineers with knowledge in Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure Clouds. The report also saw an increase in searches devops engineer and site reliability engineer.

Other key roles identified include penetration testers, security engineers and GRC (Governance, Risk and Compliance) consultants. data scientist and data analysts, developers (especially full-stack developers), front-end developers and UI/UX designers. It also reminded of the growing need for soft skills including adaptability, collaboration, communication, creativity and problem-solving.

Across the board, IT salaries in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney are very similar in both guides, with the difference typically ranging from around $10,000 to $20,000 per year, up or down, in most regions.
