Location: McLean, Virginia
Price: $ 8.7 million
This unusual new spec house in the Virginia suburbs offers an old-fashioned mix of hardwood flooring milled from trees on the property and reclaimed materials from the former house on the site thats been paired with ultra-modern features. Among them are a video wall of 16 TV screens stitched together, a $ 100,000 fireplace and a single-piece wood and steel helical staircase that weighs 30,000 pounds.
The builder, Ahmad Khreshi, “milled and cured the maple and oak trees on the property and also took some of the wood and joists” from the former house on the property and used them in the ceilings, floors and shelves of the new home, said listing agent Ali Alasgar Farhadov, of Compass.
“We work with a lot of builders,” he said. “This is the first of its kind, very unique in the industry.”
Mr. Khreshi “really, really loved the work of Piet Mondrian,” a Dutch painter who was one of the pioneers of 20th-century abstract art, Mr. Farhadov said. “So much of the house is based on Mondrian’s ‘Composition A’ painting. You can see it in the front side of the property. ”

Known as De Stijl House, after the De Stijl art movement that Mondrian co-founded in 1917, the home has a number of unusual features. These include a pivoting front door, a handcrafted open-hearth pizza oven, a 12-foot-wide custom ellipse-shaped skylight and Japanese-style Shou Sugi Ban Yakisugi carbonized wood siding that blocks rot and pests.
From the concrete front porch, you step into a foyer, with an office and a powder room on the right, and then up a few steps to the open-concept great room, which has living and dining areas and the kitchen, Mr. Farhadov said. Two sets of stackable glass doors open to the pool and patio area, and the mudroom and a three-car garage are tucked behind the 10-foot-wide gas fireplace.
The first upper level holds a lounge / family room and the four bedrooms. The primary suite features a walk-in closet, a built-in coffee machine and a modern bathroom with a voice-controlled shower, a Picasso tub, heated floors, a towel warmer and floating concrete sinks.

There is another upper level that features a loft with a wet bar and large windows that flood the open space with bright natural light.
“The lower level is amazing,” Mr. Farhadov said. “It’s all open, except for a room in the back with the spa and sauna and shower.”
There is another wet bar down here, along with an LED art panel made of polished blue onyx and an entertaining area with the video wall of 16 Bezel flat screens that display multiple channels simultaneously or one channel as one big screen.
The 8,838-square-foot house has four bedrooms, four full bathrooms and four partial bathrooms. It sits on a 0.51-acre lot.
Amenities include a heated pool and spa, a three-car garage, a wine cellar, two bars, a video wall of 16 TV screens and a lower-level sauna.
You can walk from the home to downtown McLean, Mr. Farhadov said. And it’s a five- to seven-minute drive to Tysons Corner, which is known for its luxury malls and office buildings that house many corporate headquarters.
“You’re also close to Washington, DC,” he said. “You’re 20 minutes from the White House, 20 to 25 minutes from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.”
