A 64-year-old scooter rider without a helmet was in critical condition Friday after he was hit by a car in Manhattan.
The driver of the gas-powered scooter was heading north 10th Ave. through Chelsea As the driver of a gray Acura sedan turned left onto W. 20th St., it struck him around 2:58 p.m., police said.
Paramedics rushed the scooter driver to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, police said.
“I heard a boom and I ran over,” said a 37-year-old parking attendant who gave his name as Diego. “He was lying face up on the floor. His scooter was on its side. He wasn’t moving.”
“No helmet,” Diego added. “It’s very sad, man. Very sad. People stopped and tried to help him, but he wouldn’t move.”
The 48-year-old woman driving the Acura stopped at the scene, police said, and there were no arrests.
