Authorities rescued a 75-year-old hiker Saturday afternoon after he fell more than 100 feet from a rocky cliff off San Antonio Valley Road in unincorporated Santa Clara County.
The incident occurred sometime after 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies located the injured hiker at the bottom of the cliff but were unable to reach him due to the terrain and called in the San Jose Police Department’s helicopter (AIR3) to assist in the rescue .
“Despite heavy tree cover, AIR3 successfully lowered an officer via long line to the hiker’s location,” SJPD said in a news release. “The officer and hiker were then freed from the creek bed and transported a few feet to a waiting medical helicopter, stationed approximately half a mile away.”
It is unclear if the hiker had company or was hiking alone.
He was flown to a trauma center for emergency care. His current condition is unknown.
