AdeleHis son is up for a big surprise.
The British singer told Oprah Winfrey in her highly anticipated “Adele: One Night Only” special Sunday that her son, 9-year-old Angelo, is not yet really aware that his mother is mega-famous.
“So Angelo knows you’re Adele?” Winfrey asked for the Grammy winner in a rose garden.
Adele, one of the best-selling music artists in the world, said he had no idea until recently how he saw a series of likes and comments on social media, “and then he said,” People really like you.
“He’s starting to get it a little bit, but not really,” she added.
“You did not put him in one Taylor Swift Concert and he was like … could not believe that all those people were there? Winfrey asked.
Adele said he liked the Swift concert.
“Because he used to come to my stadium shows for my rehearsals and it would be empty. He’s like, ‘So many people come to their shows,’ because I would leave him before they all arrived,” she said. “It was so cute and so funny.”
The London-born songwriter said the intimate concert, recorded last month at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, was the first time her son had seen her. The concert and the Winfrey interview were combined for the CBS Special which aired Sunday evening.
“It’s the absolute honor of my life to have you here tonight, baby,” Adele told her son off stage.
Her new album, “30,” is intended as a way for her son to convey the feelings that led to their divorce in 2019 when he reached adulthood, she told Winfrey.
Adele and Angelo’s father, Simon Konecki, now live across the street from each other in Beverly Hills. They have remained friends since the split and co-parents Angelo.
“I really ignored myself. For a long time. What was wild to me was when I realized it,” Adele said of the reasons behind the separation.
She said she sometimes felt “a little selfish” trying to dismantle her child’s nuclear family structure in search of her own happiness.
“And I knew as an adult Angelo would be mad at me for doing that. I knew that when he became an adult he would be mad at me. And I did not want that either. But it was, it was hard work.
“I just wanted him to hear me talk insanely deep about who I am and how I feel, as you know, and I do not know if I would ever be able to have that conversation with him in real life.”
After opening with her iconic smash hit “Hello”, Adele debuted her new song “Easy on Me”, as well as other anthems from her new album including “I Drink Wine”, “Hold On”, and older classics such as “Rolling in the Deep”, “Make You Feel My Love” and “Someone Like You.”
