According to the statement made by Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s office, he gave a safe haven to Sharbat Gula, the green-eyed “Afghan Girl” whose photo was published in National Geographic in 1985 and became the symbol of her country’s wars.

The government intervened after Gula asked for help to leave Afghanistan after the Taliban took over the country in August, adding that Gula’s arrival was part of a broader program to resettle and integrate Afghan citizens.

US photographer Steve McCurry captured a photo of Gula as a teenager living in a refugee camp on the Pakistan-Afghan border.
