Alameda City Councilwoman Trish Spencer required medical attention after being found intoxicated near Pine Avenue in Long Beach early Friday morning while attending a League of California Cities conference, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Spencer was in Laguna Beach as a representative of the city of Alameda, which paid for travel, lodging and registration fees for her to attend the meeting and interact with other city representatives.
At 12:12 a.m. Friday, Long Beach police and fire personnel responded to an intoxicated woman near the intersection of Pine Avenue and Broadway in downtown Long Beach, according to LBPD Public Information Officer Richard Mejia.
Emergency personnel transported her to a nearby hospital where she received medical treatment. The Long Beach Police Department treated the incident as a medical emergency and not a criminal act, Mejia said. He could not provide information on any injuries sustained by Spencer.
Spencer did not respond to requests for comment from the Bay Area News Group at the time of publication of this article, nor did other members of the Alameda City Council.
Friday’s incident isn’t the first controversy Spencer has faced with alcohol. Her husband, Joel Spencer, sued the city of Alameda and its police department after he was arrested on DUI charges on St. Patrick’s Day 2016. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and later sought compensation for defamation, bodily harm and the costs of the criminal proceedings.
