Ciaran Brennan and John Joe Patrick Finn Benoit pulled out during the week.
Wolfsburg center-back Anselmo Garcia McNulty and Watford midfielder Boson Lawal have been called into Ireland’s under-21 squad for the matches that start on Sunday. They will replace Sheffield Wednesday center back Kieran Brennan and Getafe midfielder John Joe Patrick Finn Benoit, who withdrew from the squad during the week.
“I had a very positive conversation with Jun Jo, and from that discussion, it was clear that the appropriate thing to do was to let him focus fully on his upcoming auditions,” Newspaper quoted The FAI website.
“He was very excited about the recall and looks forward to participating in the Irish setup in the near future.
Unfortunately, Ciaran Brennan was unable to make the trip because he was sick and we wish him a speedy recovery.
“We decided to bring Bosson, who has performed well at Watford academy this season, and Anselmo García MacNulty who also performed well for Wolfsburg in this campaign. It’s an opportunity for both players to impress in training.”
As Crawford mentioned, the two players have had very impressive seasons with their clubs this season.
Lawal was recently named Player of the Season award from Watford Academy after an impressive Under-18 and Under-23 campaign. Given Watford’s promotion to the Premier League for next season, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the 18-year-old participating during the campaign period.
García McNulty’s performance and development led to his association with Eintracht Frankfurt in recent weeks. However, Wolfsburg sporting director Jorg Schmadtke denied the rumors, suggesting instead that the 18-year-old could train with the first team / exit on loan next season.
The U-21 is set to play 3 friendly matches. The first match against Switzerland comes on Sunday, after they face Australia the following Wednesday and the final match against Denmark will take place on Saturday.
All matches will be streamed on Premier Sports / Free Sports with the matches against Switzerland and Australia shown live while the Denmark match will be shown in full later in the day.
