A bad night in The Bronx got worse Thursday when Anthony Volpe was removed from the Yankees’ game against the Angels before the top of the eighth inning with what the team called “left foot soreness” after the shortstop knocked a ball off his foot in the second inning.
After fouling the ball off his foot in the second, Volpe stayed in the game and popped out to first, struck out in the fourth and popped out again in the seventh.
He was briefly replaced by Oswaldo Cabrera.
The 23-year-old has only missed one game this season.
After slumping for parts of the first half, Volpe has been hitting better since the All-Star break, though he has just two hits in his last 16 at-bats.
