Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly added confusion to the Democratic veepstakes Sunday when he posted — and then quickly deleted — a social media post saying his focus was now on “serving Arizonans.”
The VP hopeful raised his eyebrows as he made the statement at X that almost implied he can be uncontroversial to serve as a running mate for presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris before the post disappeared.
“My background is a little different than most politicians,” read the now-cut post. “I spent my life serving in the Navy and at NASA, where the mission always comes first.
“Now my mission is to serve Arizonans.”
Kelly then posted another tweet it was more general and left less room for speculation about his future.
“Whether it was from my time in the Navy and at NASA, serving in the US Senate or visiting our troops overseas: I’ve learned that when your country calls you to serve, you always answer the call,” he tweeted along with a photo of him talking to military personnel.
Kelly is among several candidates seeking to run on the Democratic ticket with current Vice President Harris against former President Donald Trump and his running mate from Ohio Sen. JD Vance.
He was scheduled to be interviewed by Harris at her home in Washington DC on Sunday, Reuters reported.
Other Democrats speculated as potential Harris candidates include Pennsylvania Governor Josh ShapiroIllinois Governor JB Pritzker, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.
Harris is expected to reveal his choice for vice president as early as Monday, according to Reuters.
