SAN MATEO — An assault Friday morning in San Mateo ended with the victim shooting and wounding his attacker, police said.
The incident happened around 7:55 a.m. near the intersection of 19th Avenue and Grant Street, according to the San Mateo Police Department.
Police said the suspect drove a U-Haul box truck to where the victim had parked his car and the two argued. At one point, the suspect retrieved a metal pipe from the truck and struck the victim in the head and arms, according to police.
The victim, who was armed with a handgun, shot and wounded the suspect, police said.
The suspect stopped attacking the victim, got back into the U-Haul and backed into the victim, nearly running him over and crashing into his car, according to police.
Police said the suspect was later found at a Palo Alto hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
The victim was meanwhile treated for his injuries at an area hospital and released.
An investigation is underway into the incident.
