TThe head of the Wellcome Trust has called on rich countries to share the vaccine after the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board (GPMB) called for urgent international response to address the growing Covid-19 cases.
Dr Jeremy Farrar, director of Wellcome and a member of the State Sage Advisory Committee, said: “While in some parts of the world it is easy to expect that the scourge is about to end, Covid-19 is now launching a global epidemic. which comes at its peril.
“No one, either nationally or through international leadership, is doing what is right now. Health and medical problems are growing not only in India but in many parts of South Asia, Central and South America and the Middle East, and they are at high risk of spreading .
“Leaders of the G7, the G20 and the United Nations Security Council cannot stand their ground. Sharing the vaccine with vulnerable countries, and all the tools needed to combat the virus, is essential. Any delayed decision will have dire consequences.
“Wealthy countries, including the UK, US and the EU, have purchased most of the existing vaccine equipment. They must begin sharing the vaccine with the rest of the world now through COVAX, along with international export.”
