President Biden on Thursday he falsely claimed that he had never spoken to Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell as president, despite having a meeting with him at the White House two years ago.
Speaking to the Economic Club of Washington, Biden said: “Unlike my predecessor, I respect Federal Reserve independence as they sought a mandate to bring down inflation.”
“And that independence has served the country well. And by the way, I have never once spoken to the chairman of the Fed since I became president,” Biden added. “We will also do enormous damage to our economy if that independence is ever lost.”
But in May 2022, Biden met with Powell in the Oval Office in what was Bloomberg described in a report as his “third personal session with Powell” since becoming president.
