Police are investigating after human remains were found in a suitcase Tuesday on Long Island.
Officers responded to a 911 call Tuesday morning reporting “suspicious activity” in a wooded area near an apartment building in Huntington Station, New Yorkaccording to the Suffolk County Police Department.
“Upon arrival, officers located a deceased person in a suitcase adjacent to the building,” police said in a press release.
On Thursday, police said the victim had been identified as Seikeya Jones, 31.
Jones, who police said was homeless, had been reported missing on August 16.
Her cause of death is not yet known and police said the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office would conduct an autopsy.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
A resident of the apartment complex told New York ABC station WABC she had heard the sound of a woman screaming at 3 o’clock on Sunday.
Another person who lives in the area said she saw police responding to the incident.
“The police came and lifted it and saw it was a body,” the person said. “The smell was rancid. Powerful.”
