A wildfire in the hills west of Coalinga grew rapidly in the first hours, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said.
The Boone fire was reported at 12 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, off Highway 198. By 7 p.m., it had burned 3,000 acres and by Wednesday morning was estimated at 11,000 acres (17 square kilometers), CalFire said.
Evacuations were ordered Wednesday morning for a sparsely populated 100-square-mile area in the southern Diablo Range of Fresno County. The sheriff’s office said about three dozen homes were in the fire’s path.
Highway 198 was closed between Highway 25 and Coalinga.
The map above shows the approximate perimeter as a black line and the evacuation area in red.
