Actress Danielle Fishel opens up about her recent breast cancer diagnosis.
The “Boy Meets the World” the star is revealed on Monday’s episode of her “Pod Meets World” podcast. that the doctors told her she has DCIS and explained that it “stands for ductal carcinoma in situ” and is considered “a form of breast cancer.”
She told co-hosts, former co-viewers Will Friedle and Rider Strongthat “it is very, very, very early. It is technically zero.”
Fishel, who played Topanga Lawrence on the hit ABC teen series from 1993-2000, continued, “To be specific, just because I like too much information all the time, I was diagnosed with high-grade DCIS with microinvasion.”
According to the American Cancer Society, approx 1 in 5 new breast cancer diagnoses will be DCIS and almost all women with DCIS can be cured.
The 43-year-old mother of two optimistically said she is “going to be fine” and shared her medical plans.
“I’m going to have surgery to remove it,” Fishel said. “I’m going to some follow-up treatment. I have had to make many decisions in the past few days.”
She hopes her decision to go public with her diagnosis will motivate others to get checked regularly.
“The only reason I got this cancer when it’s still stage zero is because the day I got my text that my annual mammogram had come up, I made an appointment,” explained Fishel. “They found it so, so, so early that I’m going to be fine. And so I want to share this because I hope it will encourage someone to get in there. If it’s your time, if you’ve never had an appointment before, go in there.”
