It is reported that a bride left her sister to marry the groom and died in her own marriage, it is reported.
The bride, who is locally named as Surbhi, died of a heart attack at the ceremony in Etawah town of Uttar Pradesh.
She was set to marry the groom Manjesh Kumar during a Hindu wedding, but the dead fiancé’s sister took the ring at the last minute after a family tragedy.
According to the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS), a doctor arrived at Samaspura village for the festivities, but was later declared brought dead.
She is said to have died after garlands were exchanged as part of Hindu wedding rituals before falling on the stage.
Surbhi died of a ‘heavy cardiac arrest’ that occurred right in the middle of the wedding ceremony.
The woman’s brother Saurabh had reportedly said: “We didn’t know what to do in the situation.
“Both the families sat together and someone suggested that my younger sister Nisha should be married off to the groom.
“The families discussed the matter and both agreed.”
Surbhi’s body was kept in a separate room during the festivities and she was later cremated.
Speaking to mail online Ajab Singh, one of Surbhi’s uncles, said that it was a ‘difficult call’ for the family to go ahead with the marriage.
He said: “A daughter was lying dead in one room and another daughter was getting married in another room.
“We have never seen such mixed feelings. The sadness at his death and the joy of marriage has not yet sunk in.”
