At least one person was injured Friday when a cafeteria manager crashed into three propane tanks behind a Florida elementary school, officials said.
The incident happened just before 3:30 p.m. in the back of Marjory Stoneman Douglas Elementary School — the lower Miami-Dade school that shares the same name as high school where a gunman slaughtered 17 classmates in 2018.
Cafeteria workers had backed their car into the tanks, cracked open the tops and sprayed a powerful stream of propane into the air, 7 News Miami reported.
Firefighters from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and its hazmat division responded to the scene — they are shutting down the leaking tanks and monitoring other leaks, a spokesman confirmed.
The school and a nearby church were evacuated and the driver was taken to hospital. Their condition is not yet clear.
School was not in session when the accident occurred.
According to the elementary school’s calendar, Saturday marks the school’s first official back-to-school event that includes parents and students. The first day of the course is August 15.
The Miami-Dade School District was not immediately available for further information.
