The Canberra Raiders gave star hooker Josh Hodgson permission to explore his options, the Wests Tigers toured the UK international. Hodgson’s administration applied to the Raiders late last week for permission to look around. Now he has reportedly been offered a two-year deal with the Tigers, who must negotiate his release from Green Machine. The 31-year-old signed with Canberra for next season, but beyond that no new deal would be offered. Hodgson is highly respected within the Raiders walls, and there is a feeling that his quality and leadership will be a perfect fit for the struggling Tigers. While it’s far from a done deal, there is a feeling the move could be resolved quickly provided the Tigers can come to an agreement with Canberra’s hierarchy. His departure will continue the Raiders striker pack renewal following the departures of Sia Soliola (retired), Dunamis Lui (non-contract), Siliva Havili (South Sydney) and Ryan James (Brisbane Broncos). The Raiders extended Tom Starling’s contract until the end of 2023 with a reciprocal option for 24, a sign that he was seen as a long-term option. The Raiders came when he landed on Gold Coast midfielder Jamal Fogarty to replace the loss of George Williams, who returned to England mid-season due to homesickness. With Fogarty joining five-eighth Jack Wighton in the halves and full-form Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad at full-back after missing most of the 2021 season due to a serious neck injury, the Raiders will see a new-looking spine next year. MORE UPDATED NEWS Alongside Starling, Canberra has young No.9 Adam Trevilyan on the books, and has three places to fill in their roster if Hodgson leaves. The Raiders have been offered Mitch Rein, a former Titans hooker who has no contract for the next year but is linked to the Parramatta Eels. Starling’s appearance would potentially see Hodgson quit the whore-pecking order in the capital. The England international has played 137 NRL games since joining the Raiders ahead of the 2015 NRL season. Raiders coach Ricky Stuart used Starling as the number 9 starter before taking him to the bench. Hodgson left the Raiders co-captainership in the middle of the 2021 season after being demoted by the starter. He also spoke out in support of Williams, who is seeking eviction to return home. Some saw it as an attack on the club, but Hodgson said he only supported his wife. His release after seven seasons in the capital would open up some salary caps, as well as an extra spot on the Raiders’ 2022 roster.
