China on Monday prepared a guideline to tighten environmental approvals for highly polluting and energy-intensive projects, amid efforts to promote green and low-carbon development.

The guidelines issued by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment require local ecological and environment departments to strictly examine the planning of projects within highly polluting industries.

It demands strict environmental assessment and approval of polluting projects, including their construction, reconstruction and expansion.

China previously announced that it would strive to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
