The U.S. Coast Guard rescued six people after a boat fire 105 nautical miles east of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, forced them to abandon ship Sunday, officials said.
At 8:56 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Northern New England watch officers received a distress call from the fishing vessel, “Three Girls.” according to a statement from the US Coast Guard.
“We’re on fire, we’re going to abandon ship,” said the person who made the distress call.
The boat fire caused four crew members, the captain and a NOAA observer to abandon ship, the statement said.
At 9 p.m., a rapid response boat was dispatched to respond to the scene and aircrews from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod were launched to provide aerial support, the Coast Guard said.
By 11:30 p.m., all people on board had been recovered from a life raft and no serious injuries were reported, according to authorities. The survivors were taken to a pier in South Portland on Monday morning.
“I couldn’t be prouder of our crew’s quick response in this rescue,” Lt. Cmdr. Brent Lane, commanding officer of the USCGC William Chadwick’s response cutter, said in the statement. “This rescue shows that preparation and the right equipment are just as important as the bravery and professionalism our team consistently demonstrates.”
