Complaints from US air travelers rose 12% last year, data from the federal Department of Transportation show.
There were 96,853 flyer “submissions” in 2023, up from 86,240 in 2022, the most since 2020, according to the annual Air travel consumer report.
Nearly 70%, or 67,661, of the submissions involved US airlines, while 26% focused on foreign airlines.
According to the report, an average of 91% of reports over the past three years have been complaints from annoyed passengers.
The top complaint in 2023 was about disability-related issues, with 2,685 flyer complaints, up 28% on the previous year.
DOT saw a similar increase of 27% discrimination-related complaints 2023, with 223.
The department would not break down the complaints by airline or airport.
The soaring number of complaints comes as disruptive, out-of-control incidents on planes make headlines almost daily.
