Construction on a new mixed-use building in South Los Angeles with affordable apartments upstairs and a Costco downstairs will begin this week with a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday.
The upcoming development at 5035 Coliseum St. in Baldwin Village will be the first of its kind to have a Costco as its tenant in the United States, according to developer Thrive Living.
The “state-of-the-art” superstore will offer residents and locals “fresh produce and healthy food options, as well as optical services, a pharmacy and delivery services to support the needs of local businesses,” the company said in a release.
The project will include the popular street-level wholesaler with 800 apartments on the upper floors.
About 23% of the units — 184 in total — will go to low-income households and the rest will be offered as non-subsidized affordable and workforce housing, Thrive Living said.
The project is also expected to bring thousands of new construction jobs to the community.
