The early indication we have of this variant is that it may be more transmissible than the Delta variant and the vaccines we currently have may be less effective against it.

To be clear, we have not discovered any of this new variant in the UK at this time. But we have always been clear that we will take steps to protect the progress we have made.

So what we will do is that from noon tomorrow we will cancel all flights from six countries in southern Africa and we will add these countries to the red list for travel. These countries are South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Botswana. We will demand that everyone who arrives from these countries from 04:00 on Sunday be quarantined in a hotel.

If someone arrives before, they should isolate themselves at home and take a PCR test on day two and day eight. If anyone has arrived from any of these countries in the last 10 days, we ask them to take PCR tests.
