A wildfire that started in a park south of Reno jumped the road and forced thousands from their homes.
The Davis Fire was reported around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 in Davis Creek Regional Park, west of Interstate 580 in the Washoe Lake area.
The first evacuations were called in the afternoon for the Galena and Washoe City neighborhoods, and the evacuation zone continued to expand through Sunday afternoon. An emergency declaration from Gov. Joe Lombardo’s office said about 20,000 people were evacuated.
As of Sunday night, fire managers for the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest put the fire’s area at 6,500 acres (10 square miles) without containment; a revised estimate Monday from the Washoe County sheriff’s office said it was 4,700 acres (7.3 square miles). Fourteen 14 buildings were “known to be affected.”
I-580 between Reno and Carson City reopened Sunday.
