A California adult driver’s license is good for five years. About two months before it expires Department of Motor Vehicles sends a message with renewal instructions. Here are the most common scenarios:
No office visit required. A driver under the age of 70 who has made an in-person renewal within the last 10 years may qualify to renew online, by phone, by post or at a DMV kiosk with a payment of $45. This is not an option if there are certain red flags on your record.
Personal renewal, no test required. If you renewed without an office visit the previous two times, you will likely be instructed to come in for a new photo, thumbprint and vision test.
Personal renewal, knowledge test required. The DMV may require the test due to a number of factors, including the driver’s record or age or if their license has been expired for more than 60 days. The agency encourages drivers to start the renewal process online, and in most cases the test can also be taken online, but the office visit will still be required.
Renewal of identity, driving test required. It’s rare for the DMV to require a rear wheel test from an adult with an existing driver’s license, but it is a possibility if they determine there is reason to doubt your ability to drive.
How are the rules different for drivers 70 and over?
A driver older than 70 must take the knowledge test and do a personal renewal every five years. The knowledge test (or the alternative video course) can be taken online, but the office visit is still mandatory.
If I renew online, will I get a new license card?
Yes. It usually arrives within three weeks, although the DMV says to allow 60 days. It will be the same as your previous one – including the same photo – but with the new expiry date.
So I can’t change my weight or hair color?
Changing your physical description requires an office visit.
What happens if I want to get a new picture?
If you are doing your renewal, there will not be an additional fee to go into a DMV office for a photo. If your license does not expire and you still want a new image, you must pay the $36 fee for a duplicate license.
Can I submit my documents for a REAL ID while doing my online renewal?
You can upload the identification and residence documents, but you still need to make an office visit if you are a first time REAL ID applicant.
