Dozens of people were killed during a religious fire in Israel on Friday, in what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a “grave disaster.”
Tens of thousands of highly Orthodox Jews gathered at the tomb of the 2nd century sage Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai in Galilee for the annual Lag B. Omer memorial service, which included night prayers, secret songs and dances.
Overjoyed, health officials stormed Mount Meron in protest of Covin’s warning. According to witnesses, people were suffocated or trampled in the airway, and some remained unaccounted for until the PA system appealed.
Police sources told Haretz that dozens of people slipped on stairs and caused dozens to fall.
Videos posted on social media showed thousands of people gathered at the event and then fighting to escape the violence.
