Mayes’ tackle came loose after he was stepped on by one of his own linemen. He still completed the play.
Drake Maye got off to an impressive start Sunday night, leads a landing gear on his first streak of the night.
However, the offensive line had its share of struggles. They fumbled on a couple of moves, one of which led to Jacoby Brissett being crushed. Maye’s first snap failed.
On one play, Sidy Sow could be seen stepping on Maye’s block. The shoe came flying off Maye’s foot and onto the turf.
Maye refused to give up on the play, continued his roll and kept his eyes upfield where he connected with running back JaMycal Hasty for a 14-yard gain.
Maye completed eight of his first 12 passes, including an 18-yard touchdown to Kevin Harris who broke a tackle, kept his feet swinging and rumbled in for the score. Maye also hit fellow freshman Ja’Lynn Polk on a play-action pass for 29 yards.
Brissett, who coach Jerod Mayo said before the game is the Patriots’ kickoff, went 2-4 in the first quarter during his only streak of action.
