San Diego – Drivers entering San Diego County from Mexico on Monday had to wait for hours as passengers hit the road with full force for Memorial Day weekend.
“It looks like a horrible nightmare,” said passenger Olivia Trujillo. “Keeping it real, it’s really bad.”
Wait times for some passengers, including the San Ysidro Land Port of Entry, were at least twice the average wait, causing some headaches for those hoping to navigate entry quickly.
US Customs and Border Protection reported wait times of up to four hours for cars passing through the San Ysidro and Ote Mesa border crossings on Memorial Day. As of around 10:30 on Monday night, the wait time for normal traffic across the San Ysidro border was still about four hours; It was two and a half hours for those in Ready Lane; And 15 minutes into the quick SENTRI lane, the agency’s website shows.
Trujillo said, “I’ve been waiting 10 hours, not three hours (in the past).” “This time, I decided to leave my car here in America and do the walking work.”
Some travelers say the wait was longer than reported.
“It took me five minutes on the motorcycle, but I saw traffic and it’s probably over six hours,” said Juan Casas, who arrived back in San Ysidro.
Pedestrians to San Ysidro said the wait was also worse than usual. It was at least three hours for passenger Kendall Ivy.
“It seemed like every food item was flagged off, given an orange stamp and pulled over,” Ivy said. “I mean, even a bowl of fruit. That’s where it was taking so long in the end. “
The wait time has increased throughout the year. According to the Border Patrol, this is partly due to a sharp increase in non-citizens attempting to enter the US last month, tying up departmental resources and increasing waiting times.
Crossing the border is still limited to the necessary travel for about three more weeks, though some people told Fox 5 that they have traveled for a holiday this weekend.
