Durham University student’s new look after scholarship fund

FOR 19-year-old Grace Purnell, a scholarship from Durham University has opened up “an area of ​​opportunity.”

Ms. Purnell from Hartlepool is studying Environmental Geology in her second and first year, transitioning from the natural sciences after discovering her passion for geology.

Alongside his academic studies, he was on the production team for the summer musical at St Mary’s College, joined the College hockey team and hopes to start basketball in his sophomore year.

On top of that, Ms. Purnell is also a Fellow of the Durham Paleontological Society and Geology for Global Development.

A former student at St Hild’s Church of England School, Hartlepool and Bede Sixth Form College in Billingham, Ms. Purnell counts on her scholarship to help her take full advantage of life in Durham.

Received the Brian Cooper Scholarship from County Durham which supports young people with tuition fees, living expenses and other Higher Education related expenses.

Ms Purnell said: “Thanks to the scholarship, I have never had to turn down any opportunity in Durham because of money, which would have been a major hurdle for me.

“I really enjoyed meeting people I wouldn’t have met otherwise, and I’ve done a lot of things I wouldn’t have done before.

“Anyone considering applying to Durham definitely should.

“One of the best choices I’ve made and as soon as I got here I knew I was in the right place.”

“And if you’re thinking of applying for a scholarship, definitely do it. Even if you think you can’t understand, just apply because you never know what will happen. It can truly be life-changing – and it was.”
