Egypt: Inauguration of Luxor’s Avenue of the Sphinxes’

Pharaonic chariots and hundreds of artists performed in a lavish ceremony to mark the opening to the public of the 3,000-year-old Sphinx Avenue in Luxor, Egypt.

It has taken decades to dig out an old walkway, which is almost 3 km long and connects two of the city’s largest temples.

The ceremony incorporated parts of the ancient festival that traveled along the route each year. It also contained music inspired by stories written on the walls of temples in hieroglyphs. Egypt hopes the event will strengthen its sick tourism sector, plagued by political unrest and pandemics.
