Gabby Petito, 22, was traveling in her van with her boyfriend when she disappeared. His family believe he was last seen with him in the Grand Teton-Yellowstone area. WFLA chose not to name the boyfriend at this point in the investigation.
Petito’s family released a joint statement saying her boyfriend “refuses to help”. Her parents said in a statement that she shouldn’t “be in the background” as various agencies, including the FBI and local police, continue to search for her. They say he’s back in Florida and has a lawyer.
The van the couple was traveling in was also found at her boyfriend’s family home in Florida. The security forces towed the minibus to be considered as evidence.
“The Schmidt and Petito family are going through the worst moments of their lives,” Petito’s parents’ families said in a statement. “Their beautiful 22-year-old daughter is missing and the only person who can help find Gabby is refusing to help.”
The family’s lawyer for the boyfriend’s family said Tuesday that the family “will stay in the background at this point and will not make any further comment”.
