Authorities brought Kevin Kangethe back to Boston from Kenya after he allegedly killed his girlfriend and left her body outside Logan Airport.
Authorities arrested and extradited one Kenyan man who allegedly killed his girlfriend in Boston, the FBI’s Boston office announced Monday.
Kevin Kangethe fled to Kenya to avoid prosecution after authorities found Margaret Mbitu dead in a car outside Boston Logan International Airport, the agency said.
“Our family has been notified by District Attorney Kevin Hayden’s office that the process to bring our beloved Maggie justice will continue tomorrow with the trial of the person charged with her murder,” Mbitu’s family said in a statement released Monday. “We are deeply grateful to the district attorney, investigators, police and victim advocates who have supported our family and are ensuring that Maggie’s killer is held accountable.”
Mbitus the body was found in a parking lot in Logan in November 2023, authorities said. An investigation by the Massachusetts State Police found Kangethe responsible for Mbitu’s killer. But he fled to Nairobi days before police found Mbitu’s body, authorities said.
Kenyan authorities arrested Kangethe in January at the request of US law enforcement, according to the Boston FBI office. Kangethe escaped custody, but was arrested again a few days later.
The statement said several municipal and federal organizations were working with Kenyan law enforcement to arrest and extradite Kangethe. He is scheduled to be arraigned on the murder and evading charges Tuesday in Suffolk Superior Court, the FBI in Boston said.
The representation for Kangethe could not be reached for comment.
