The Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix final many people wanted to see will become a reality. Patricio “Pitbull” Freire defeated Emmanuel Sanchez in the Bellator 255 main event to retain the featherweight championship and move on to face A.J. McKee in the finals.
Freire and Sanchez originally met at Bellator 209 in November 2018, with Freire edging out Sanchez on the scorecards to retain the Bellator 145-pound title.
Since that win, Freire added the Bellator lightweight championship to his mantle and became a champ-champ with a 61-second finish of Michael Chandler in May 2019. His Grand Prix tournament path prior to this fight saw him defeat Juan Archuleta by decision before a knockout win over Pedro Carvalho.
After the loss to Freire, Sanchez rebounded with a decision win over Georgi Karakhanyan. His Grand Prix experience prior to this title bout saw him submit Tywan Claxton in the opening round before a win over Daniel Weichel in the quarterfinals.
