MILLBRAE – San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man who authorities said brandished a gun outside a Safeway Sunday afternoon.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office said the 36-year-old man they arrested was a previously convicted felon prohibited from possessing a weapon. Authorities said deputies arrested him on suspicion of brandishing a weapon, possession of a weapon by a person with a felony conviction, possession of ammunition by a felon, carrying a loaded handgun at a person in a vehicle, carrying a concealed handgun in a car and child abuse.
Deputies pulled him over as he was driving southbound on El Camino Real, and the man surrendered without incident, authorities said. They added that they found a loaded gun in the car after arresting him.
They had responded to the Safeway in the 500 block of El Camino Real around 1 p.m. for reports of a man brandishing a gun in the parking lot. That person then sped away, authorities said.
Authorities did not immediately say what prompted the child abuse allegation.
El Camino Real was closed in both directions for about 30 minutes.
