Two officers were stabbed by inmates, the Department of Corrections said, and three more were injured Wednesday night.
Five corrections officers at Massachusetts’ only maximum-security prison were injured Wednesday night, the state Department of Corrections said.
A department spokesperson said two corrections officers were stabbed multiple times by inmates around 6:20 p.m., and three more officers were injured when they responded to the incident.
All five officers were taken to a nearby hospital, the spokesman said. The facility is safe and an investigation involving the Massachusetts State Police is ongoing, according to the spokesperson.
The Massachusetts Correction Officers Federated Union first shared the incident on Facebook Wednesday night, saying an officer was stabbed in the back and head.
Their post criticized the Department of Corrections, claiming it has been four years since the department had “authorized the use of tactical units and conducted a thorough search of the entire institution.”
“ENOUGH!” wrote the union. “How much more do our members have to endure before you decide to keep them safe? The inmates are literally running the asylum. Do your job.”
Last month, union told to Boston Herald that dozens of “homemade sharpened weapons” were found inside Souza-Baranowski.
“Someone is going to get hurt,” Dennis Martin, the president of the MCOFU, told Herald. “It’s a scary time we’re in now.”
The Department of Corrections did not immediately respond to questions about the union’s claims.
