“Retailers were asking and requiring you to wear a mask,” said Willie Solis, a shopper at the delivery app Shipt in Denton, Texas, which works at stores like Target, Kroger, and CVS. “Most people were still doing the right thing and wearing them.”
Since the CDC’s announcement, however, “it has been a complete turnaround,” Mr. Solis said. Denton, like Yorktown, sits in a county that voted for former President Donald J. Supported Trump by a single digit margin.
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 97 percent of Democrats in a March poll said they wore a mask “at least most of the time” when they might be in contact with people outside their homes, and an equal portion of Democrats said he believes masks limit the spread of the coronavirus.
That compared with only 71 percent of Republicans who said they wear masks outside the home at least most of the time, and just half said they thought masks were effective.
This suggests that a large number of Republicans are wearing masks simply to comply with the rules, not because they believed it was important, said Ashley Kirzinger, associate director of opinion and survey research for the Kaiser Foundation. He cited polling to show that even Republicans were less likely to be vaccinated.
Matt Cannon, a room-service server at Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Miss., said that before the CDC relaxed its recommendations, the resort’s policy was that all guests should wear masks in common areas, as long as they were whether eating, drinking or smoking, and that it was strictly enforced.
“There were several security checkpoints around the place where we wanted someone from security to tell them, ‘Please put on a mask,'” said Mr Kennan, the manager of a store with his union, Unite Here. “Guests had stations with disposable masks to wear if they didn’t have one.”
