It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of MP for James Brokenshire at the age of 53.

“James died peacefully at Darent Valley Hospital last night at the bedside with his family members. He has been in the hospital since Sunday after his condition deteriorated rapidly.

“James is not only a brilliant Minister of Government, both as Minister for Security and Immigration at the Home Office and as Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Northern Ireland Office and the Department for Housing, Communities and Local Government, but also as a special secretary, first appointed to Hornchurch in 2005. He was a constituency MP. 2010 and then for Old Bexley & Sidcup for 11 years.

But most importantly, he was a loving father to his three children, a devoted husband to Cathy, and a devoted friend to many.

“We would like to thank all the NHS staff, especially those at Guy’s & St Thomas in London, who have looked after James with such warmth, care and professionalism over the past three and a half years.

“We also ask that our privacy as a family be respected at this time.”

A number of government officials have used social media to commemorate Brokenshire.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a tweet: “Hopelessly sad to hear the news about James Brokenshire.

“James was the kindest, kindest, and most humble of politicians, but he was also extraordinarily influential.

“He served with special privilege as Minister of the Interior and Minister of Security.

“If the government needed something, well and quickly – and logically explained – James was the man to do it.

“I’ve worked with him for many years in London and I know how much he cares about the interests of his constituents in Bexley.

“His fight against cancer was heroic, and it’s a measure of his determination to come back from his first battle with the disease and serve in government again.

“He will be missed by everyone who knew him. Our thoughts are with Cathy and her family.”
