DENVER (KDVR) – A former officer of the Lakewood Police Department committed suicide Tuesday over a charge of sexual assault on women at work.
Randall Butler, who turned 40 on Sunday, was charged with two counts of sexual assault in Denver and is facing trial before a jury. The judge informed the jury on Tuesday that Butler had died before trial could resume to close.
Denver District Attorney Beth McCann said in a statement, “We are sorry that this trial ended this way and our sympathies are with the family and friends of Mr. “I am grateful that the victims in this case had the strength and courage to come forward and have the opportunity to tell their stories despite the jury’s decision not being finalised.”
Butler was accused of Sexual harassment of many women in the line of duty.
He resigned from the department and was arrested in 2018 After a woman came to the fore about his attack. After that more women came forward.
Court records show Butler faces another sexual assault trial in Jefferson County later this month. He had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
