FREMONT – A Hayward driver who authorities say was intoxicated turned himself in to Fremont Police in the alleged fatal hit-and-run of an unidentified jogger last week, according to a news release.
Police said the suspect, a 29-year-old Hayward man Sunday night, was allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he struck a pedestrian jogging north near Mission Boulevard and Nursery Avenue. Authorities found the jogger dead at the scene sometime around 8:40 p.m., police said.
Police say suspect Brian Gutierrez allegedly fled the scene on foot before police contacted him by phone. Police said he later decided to turn himself into authorities.
“Drug and alcohol influence, as well as speed, are believed to be factors in this collision,” police said.
Police arrested Gutierrez at 9:59 p.m. in Hayward, according to jail records. He was booked into the Santa Rita Jail Monday morning on suspicion of hit-and-run and driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily harm.
His trial is scheduled for Wednesday morning at 9 in Ward 702. He is being held in lieu of $125,000 bond.
This is Fremont’s fifth traffic fatality this year, police said.
