Hellions, one of the weirdest, wildest, most underrated current X-Men titles from Marvel, comes to an end in December with # 18. In the show, writers Zeb Wells and artists Steven Segovia and Ze Carlos bring back the famous X-Men enemy Madelyne Pryor – even though the publisher asks if Madelyne returns as a “friend or foe”.
Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean Gray created by Mister Sinister with her own mutant powers as well as connections to demonic magic like the Goblin Queen, appears in the first arch of Hellions, manipulating her former lover Havok against his teammates.
Pryor was killed in that arc (not for the first time), with the Krakoan Quiet Council refusing to rebuild her because she is a clone, which is generally against her protocols. Now, for the Hellions finale, she’s coming back, and writer Wells promises to keep her in a certain capacity.
“Hellions are coming to an end, but our team of outcasts will leave their mark on the way out the door,” Wells said in the Marvel announcement. “This includes bringing back one of my favorite characters, Madelyne Pryor! And take it from me, this is just the beginning for our Queen …”
Wells himself will leave Hellions to take over as chief writer of the so-called ‘Beyond Board’ of writers, who will start the Amazing Spider-Man with # 75, taking over the title three times a month. As for the X-Men line, head writer Jonathan Hickman is about to launch his swan song with the line to Inferno, a limited series that brings together many threads from his entire X-Men run — many of which ran straight through Hellions.
