NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – You want answers! So why does it seem like every meteorologist is beating around the bush when it comes to information about the upcoming tropical system? Here’s why…
It’s not just your local broadcast meteorologists who are transparent about the lack of data we have to work with around this storm. Even the local National Weather Service office in New Orleans heard their thoughts when forecasting for the coming week. This was noted in their latest area forecast discussion released on Friday morning…
“Models have an absolute melt down about how to handle the area that
the hurricane center has invested 40% for development”.
The National Hurricane Center still highlights the northern Caribbean as an area of potential development for next week. Atmospheric conditions will be very favorable for increased thunderstorm activity in this region, which is likely to organize into a closed low, then a named system.
As for the location of the landfall, the time it spends in the gulf, and the intensity of the storm…we just don’t have enough information about the storm yet to responsibly provide that information to the public. Forecast models have had this storm from Mexico to the Florida peninsula. Imagine telling ALL by the residents that there is a chance of a major hurricane heading straight for them. Not only would that be wrong, but it would also irresponsibly instill fear in communities that may be very sensitive to the topic of hurricanes at the moment given the fact that they are still recovering from past storms.
We know the public wants a concrete answer so there is plenty of time to prepare. We will have a better grasp of the situation by the weekend. Stay updated on the incoming forecast NEXT WEEK.
