The Melrose Police Department is asking for the public’s help in investigating an apparent act of vandalism at a Jewish cemetery.
The alleged vandalism occurred at Workmen’s Circle Cemetery, the department said in a statement. The cemetery is owned and managed by the Jewish Cemetery Association of Massachusetts.
Melrose police said they received a report of the vandalism around 2pm on August 20. Officers found fences around the cemetery “knocked down and charred by fire,” the statement said. A headstone was knocked over and blackened by fire, police said.
According to the statement, the fence was intact and the headstone was upright on August 18.
The department urges anyone with information to contact them at 781-979-4213.
