Police in Kentucky have recovered an SUV and an AR-15 rifle in the hunt for one suspected gunman who, authorities say, opened fire near Interstate 75, injuring several people and causing a car crash.
A small silver SUV registered to the suspect — 32-year-old Joseph A. Couch — was recovered from a US Forest Service Road off Exit 49 off I-75 Saturday night, Laurel County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post. A rifle case was also found in the vehicle.
On Sunday afternoon, sheriff’s deputies recovered a rifle near I-75 and near the SUV recovered the night before.
The discovery came in the middle of a manhunt that was launched after the shooting unfolded Saturday around 6 p.m. near exit 49 along I-75.
Police initially responded to reports of a suspect shooting at drivers from an overpass or wooded area. Authorities later named Couch as a person of interest in the shooting.
Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, a sheriff’s office spokesman, said five people were shot and all were in stable condition early Sunday, although some of the victims had “very serious” injuries, including one person who was shot in the face.
Two other people were injured in the car accident, he says.

The search was called off Saturday because of darkness, although officials kept the scene “contained” overnight, the sheriff’s office said.
The search resumed on Sunday and continues.
