The pressure continued to grow on Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman after his side were held to a frustrating goalless draw against low Cadiz.
Frenkie de Jong’s red card saw the visitors play the last 25 minutes with 10 men, with Koeman being rejected in dying seconds for disagreement.
Barcelona now have just two wins from five La Liga matches as speculation rises over Koeman’s future.
Memphis Depay went closest to Barca when he lost errors from a few yards.
But it could have been worse for a visiting side who lacked creativity as they needed goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to pull out more impressive saves late.
Koeman was left furious after two hard yellow cards to De Jong four minutes after the break led to Cadiz creating many late chances to win the match, after defending deep for the majority.
Alvaro Negredo, Salvi Sanchez and Anthony Lozano were all denied by Ter Stegen, while Depay at the other end were guilty of wasting several good opportunities for a Barcelona team that lacks quality but is full of struggle.
The frustration was exacerbated by Koeman in injury time as he was sent off from the sidelines to argue against a late booking for Sergio Busquets.
“One of the problems is in Spain, they send you off for nothing,” Koeman told La Liga TV. “They do not say why, they just say attitude. Everyone saw the moment when there was another ball on the field. Everyone has to see it.
“Of course I’m strong. I can not win the match with the press. I want to put my energy in the team and with the players. I still see a great attitude with the players, and for me it is most important. I can’t not stop it, the press writes “We have to keep going, that’s my job.”
The pressure is on Koeman after a season start in which the Catalan giants have drawn three of their first five league games and lost 3-0 to Bayern Munich in their opening match in the Champions League in the group stage last week.
The former Barcelona midfielder has not been helped by the club’s dangerous financial situation, which saw Lionel Messi leave the club this summer, leaving the manager with a young and inexperienced squad.
Seventeen-year-old midfielder Gavi made his full Barcelona debut, while Yusuf Demir, 18, continued in attack.
However, the 58-year-old’s relationship with club president Joan Laporta has been strained in recent weeks, with speculation that replacements are being considered.
‘We have a squad that can fight for the league’ – player reaction
Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto: “Here we have to try to win La Liga. This notion of ‘it’s OK to finish in the top four’ does not work for me.
“We have a squad that can fight for the La Liga title and I don’t think other sides have better teams than us. We need to get in gear and start winning.”
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique: “When I said ‘that’s what it is’, it’s because we have four absent at the top.
“I also said we would end up competing. I’m not wearing the Barca jersey to get to second or third place. I’m here to win titles and I’m absolutely convinced that despite that start “we have done, we will compete. We need the fans to stay with us.”
