At least seven lawsuits have now been filed against Boar’s Head since the embattled company recalled its products following a listeria outbreak that has killed nine people, including a New Yorker, according to a report.
A total of 58 people became ill in 18 states from spoiled meat that originated from Boar’s Heads tainted the Virginia plantwhich had reports of mold, mildew and insects.
The company recalled millions of pounds of deli meat after people started getting sick.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the number of actual cases under the outbreak was probably much higher.
It marks the largest listeria outbreak in the United States since 2011.
The lawsuits against Boar’s Head include claims of personal injury, wrongful death and deceptive marketing practices. A class action lawsuit filed in New York has an ever-growing number of plaintiffs.
One of the lawsuits was filed by the surviving relatives of Günter Morgenstein, a Holocaust survivor who died in July after consuming tainted liverwurst.
According to the complaint, the Morgensteins died of sepsis and listeria meningitis after spending 10 days in the hospital.
That trial claims the 88-year-old Virginia man’s death was a direct result of eating tainted deli meat.
The various lawsuits seek damages ranging from $25,000 to more than $5 million.
