Ex-pals of the prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case said they fear he will escape justice because German spies are moving too slowly.
German prosecutors claim to have evidence madeleine is dead and their prime suspect has been identified as Christian B – a prolific thief who has been previously convicted of sex crimes against young girls.
He was also convicted of raping a 72-year-old American woman at the same resort where Madeleine went missing in 2005.
But a year after being named a prime suspect, the sex offender has not been charged or questioned in his disappearance.
And, those who knew him when he lived in the Algarve now fear that he will never face trial for Madeleine’s disappearance, daily Mirror reports
A former friend said: “I can’t believe it’s been a year and nothing seems to have happened.
“The more we remembered and read about her past, the more we believed that she was the person responsible for taking on Madeleine.

“It’s crazy that the German police didn’t see Chris in prison or interview him.”
Chief Inspector Peter Kirkham, a former Scotland Yard detective, said he suspected the investigation was “drying up fast” and added that it appeared German police were “dragging their feet”.
Public prosecutors for the city of Braunschweig have said he has “strong evidence” that he was guilty.
But investigators declined to say what evidence they had.
Meanwhile, Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry said: “We will never give up hope of finding Madeleine alive.”
Scotland Yard also revealed that a 1980s VW T3 Westphalia white campervan has been linked to the suspect, and was seen in Praia da Luz a few days before his disappearance.
It is also believed that he was living in it in the days and weeks before and after Madeleine’s disappearance.
A 1993 Jaguar XJR6 has also been linked to a German sex offender, one of two vehicles believed to have been used to kidnap Madeleine.
He also revealed that his phone was at the resort the night the child went missing.
If the bride dies on the wedding day, the groom ties the knot with his younger sister.
He was convicted in 1994 of abusing a six-year-old girl on a playground in Germany and exposing himself to another child.
The then 17-year-old was given a two-year juvenile sentence, but later moved to Portugal where he set up a home in the coastal city of Lagoa and kept his past a secret.
Christian B’s lawyer Frederick Fulsher said his client McCann “denies any involvement” in the case.
