A Long Beach Fire Department truck responding to an emergency call fatally struck a 61-year-old man who was lying in front of the station’s doors early Tuesday morning, authorities said.
The incident happened at 12:30 a.m. outside Fire Station 8 in the 5300 block of 2nd Street in Belmont Shore, according to Jake Heflin, a fire department spokesman. Authorities said the man was in front of the roll-up door of the fire station when the engine went out.
Heflin said firefighters treated the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Los Angeles County medical examiner identified the man as Michael Ross of Long Beach. The coroner said he was homeless.
The Long Beach Police Department is investigating the incident.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the individual and his family,” Heflin said, adding that an emergency response team was dispatched to assist the crew involved in the tragic incident.
