HERCULES — A man who authorities said died early Saturday after his speeding car crashed into some trees on a Highway 4 exit was identified by the medical examiner Tuesday as Camron Johnson, 33, of Rodeo.
The crash happened around 2:39 a.m. Saturday at the San Pablo Avenue exit from westbound Highway 4.
Authorities said Johnson was driving a Chevrolet Cruze sedan at a high rate of speed when the vehicle veered off the roadway and crashed into some trees.
Hercules police said the impact threw the vehicle’s engine into the brush, causing a fire that was soon extinguished.
Rodeo-Hercules Fire Protection District firefighters had to cut open the vehicle to get to Johnson, who was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. He was the only one in the car.
The death is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. Anyone with information about the crash or what led up to it is asked to call the CHP’s Martinez office at 925-646-4980.
